Classical formula to tonify spleen and stomach qi, invigorate qi in the liver, and raise yang. relieves poor digestion due to disharmony between the liver and spleen, with symptoms of abdominal bloating, pain, or gas, with erratic stools. Originally used to relieve prolapse of organs due to deficiency of qi and yang, including rectum, uterus, colon, hemorrhoids, varicose veins and hernia. Useful in uterine bleeding, habitual miscarriage, and chronic diarrhea. Effective in relieving hypoglycemia. Source: Pi Wei Lun, Li Gao, 1249. Function: Strengthen qi; Cause Yang qi to ascend, regulate function of spleen/stomach Application: Use to relieve def. qi in spleen and stomach (def. qi in the middle warmer). Symptoms: Fatigue, shortness of breathe, headache, general feeling of coldness and sensitivity to cold, the patient likes to drink warm liquids, daytime sweating, poor appetite, chronic diarrhea or loose stools. Use to raise up the middle warmer vital qi and relieve organ prolapse. Use to clear heat where the heat is due to def. qi in the middle warmer; this is a special circumstance in TCM. Symptoms: Chronic low-grade fever plus def. qi symptoms listed above; also, the patient feels thirsty but likes to drink warm liquids (sign which shows that the fever is due to def. Middle warmer qi). In this special circumstance, the relief is unusual because herbs which have warm properties and a sweet taste (instead of cold properties and a bitter taste) are used to clear the heat. Applications also use to relieve the following: (Cases relieved with this formula must have def. middle warmer qi symptoms listed above under application #1) chronic gastroenteritis, chronic diarrhea, and chronic dysentery. Use to relieve organ prolapsed such as gastroptosis, anal prolapsed, or uterine prolapsed.
