Chinese herb information:

Traditional Chinese herbs and medicines have existed for thousands of years in China to the benefit of vast numbers of people. Their safety and efficacy are well accepted by the Chinese people. They believe that their herbs and medicines can help heal and are good for their health.

The Chinese have identified and cataloged thousands of traditional Chinese herbs. Descriptions of their herbs and its effects are well documented in ancient medical manuscripts that still exist in China. Today, millions of Chinese people still practice the use of herbs to maintain good health.

Mainstream medicine is just beginning to recognize and research the beneficial effects of traditional Chinese herbs. You can now find Western doctors who accept the use of Chinese herbs as part of the regimen for maintaining good health. Some American health insurance companies now cover treatments by alternative methods. Chinese herbal doctors are beginning to work its way into the mainstream medical community. See the American Association of Oriental Medicine, an association of Oriental medical professionals in America, www.aaom.org, as a start for more information on Chinese medicine and herb use.

USING CHINESE HERBS
Chinese herbs can be quite effective. Often formulae are used alone in acute problems at recommended package doses with remarkable effect, particularly with colds, trauma, fever, and pain. In chronic problems of deficiency (qi, blood, yin, yang, etc.), they are often the therapy of choice.

Traditional Chinese herbs may be given alone or in combination. Chinese medicines are usually taken at least thirty minutes before or after meals with a glass of water or tea with the exceptions noted on the box. If taste permits, they are best absorbed if chewed.

Chinese medicines may be valuable as adjunctive therapy to acupuncture, chiropractic, and therapeutic massage. These treatments are often limited to once a week. Daily ingestion of an appropriate amount will allow healing to take place at an accelerated pace.

CONTRAINDICATIONS
Pregnancy is the most common reason for a product being contraindicated. Women who are pregnant should take Chinese herbal products only under the careful supervision of an experienced medical health care professional.

Other contraindications should be considered for individual herbs within a formula. This includes diarrhea in weaker patients, and products should be discontinued if diarrhea develops. Similarly, Ephedra Leaf, often found in formula for wind-invasion, may cause nervousness or sleeplessness in weaker individuals, and should be used appropriately.

Contraindications also include the principle that most products should be given only for the condition for which it is indicated and discontinued once that condition has stopped or changed. Broad overviews of contraindications for specific categories are noted at the beginning of each category, where applicable. These statements, however, are no substitute for a more thorough background in traditional Chinese pathology and therapeutics, nor is a substitute for the advice of a professional health care practitioner.

ARTIFICIAL COLORS IN TRADITIONAL CHINESE HERBS AND PRODUCTS
In most cases, when an herb product is made entirely of concentrated extracts, it is sugar coated. The sugar coating preserves the ingredients and also prevents the pills from melting together. Many of the sugar coatings that the Chinese use are brightly colored due to artificial coloring.
